Soon, your office vending machines can contribute a dizzying variety of freshly printed food at the hustle of a button.
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland revealed plans Monday to create vending machines which can 3D-print customized “healthy, nutritious” food.
In a press release, the company said it has tested “starch and cellulose-based materials for 3D food prototypes” and is working in the direction of “printability of protein concentrates of both plant (oat and faba bean) and dairy (whey protein) origin.” Or, in additional useful language: printable cheese! The Vending Machine of the Future May 3D-Print Your Snacks3D-printed food at a 2014 trade show in Paris. But vending machines which can print nutritious food? That may be a game-changer. But, VTT researcher Nesli Sözer cautioned which such innovations can yet be a ways away.
“A excellent deal of work is needed in order to proceed to industrial-scale production,” said Sözer in the release. “Equipment needs to be createed in addition to materials.”
