New Free 3D Printing File Extensions From 3MF Consortium – DesignNews

by • August 7, 2016 • No Comments

The 3MF Consortium, which released its free initially core specification last year for a new 3D printing file format, has introduced two free extensions based on most practices. One manufactures it effortlessr for engineers to advantageous manage print operations, and the other increases efficiency by providing a single slice methodology. Both are aimed at high-volume additive making (AM) operations run by either service bureaus or sizeable OEMs.
Both extensions can assist move industry in the direction of a additional integrated approach to volume end-production making via 3D printing, the consortium’s executive director, Adrian Lannin, told Design News. “When companies want to get started via 3D printing for making, there are so most roadblocks and hurdles and barriers to efficiency along the way,” he said. “Our undertaking is to remove those roadblocks, manufacture it effortlessr to set up AM in an organization, and manufacture folks additional efficient and productive when via it.”

Two new extensions to the open standard 3MF file format for 3D printing have been released by the 3MF Consortium. Both can be fully implemented in HP Inc.'s next Jet Fusion 3D 4200 Printer, and HP has said it is actually working with industry partners to encertain adoption of the extensions in their products, which may already use the file format. HP's printing devices can be the initially which are compliant with this new file format. (Source: HP Inc.)

As has frequently been pointed out, Lannin said the problem with existing file formats is they’re being utilized for jobs they were never created to do, such as 3D printing. .STL, for example, was created for CNC machines, where users don’t have to worry of characteristics such as surface finish or color. “The 3MF file format, in contrast, comes with information of things you do care of, like color or scale,” he said.
Founding participants of the 3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) Consortium are industry heavyweights: 3D Systems, Autodesk, Dassault Systmes, FIT AG, GE Global Research, HP Inc., Materialise, Microsoft, Shapeways, Siemens PLM Software, SLM Solutions Group AG, Stratasys, and Ultimanufacturer. They have said their goal is to define a 3D printing format which clears up interoperability problems with multiple applications, platforms, services, and printing devices, and manufactures it possible to send full-fidelity 3D versions to all of them. The file format is open; can fully describe a version and retain characteristics such as internal information and color; is extensible so it can assist new innovations in 3D printing; and is “practical, effortless to know, and effortless to implement.”

The consortium brings together primary industry leaders to get general agreement on standard ways to approach particular problems, said Lannin. For example, the new 3MF Slice Extension came of for the reason there are various proprietary software boxs which do layer management, but every does it a various way. That means create engineers have to manufacture certain these methods are compatible, matching the software to the particular hardware they’re via. That, in turn, manufactures print problems additional most likely and increases the time needed the prepare the print job. “Members devoted hours of engineering time every week on real-world solutions,” he said. “We harvested all the most practices of participants and only picked one way, one slice methodology.”
The new 3MF Production Extension is created for high-volume users such as service bureaus. It addresses the organization and management of multiple parts in a print job, such as various parts for separate customers in a single run, said Lannin. The extension manufactures it effortlessr by keeping separate parts in separate .XML files inside the 3MF box, to divide the parsing load of a sizeable job. The 3MF box maintains one-of-a-kind identifiers for every part instance, manages the relationships one of the files, and manages the file hierarchy.

HP Inc.’s head of product communications, Russ Castronovo, said which HP needs both extensions to take full advantage of the capabilities of its next Jet Fusion printing devices, “to encertain which 3MF content can scale up for industrial-class machines, and to guarantee traceability of jobs, parts, and assemblies through the fabrication system. HP has fully implemented both extensions in our initially products and we are working with industry partners to encertain adoption of the extensions in their products as well.” HP’s printing devices can be the initially which are compliant with this new file format.
Coming up are several things the consortium is working on, Lannin told us. One of those is the fact which 3D files tend to get sizeable. “We’re considering of how to address which next.”
