If you’ve got a 3D printer and a mirror, you can recreate this mind-bending optical illusion at home – Digital Trends

You may not long ago have seen the above “Ambiguous Cylinder Illusion,” an optical puzzle by Japanese illusionist Kokichi Sugihara, in which sets of plastic squares appear circular when reflected in a mirror.
“The direct views of the objects and their mirror images generate really various interpretations of the 3D shapes,” Sugihara has explained. “They appear like vertical cylinders, but their sections appear to be rectangles, while in the other view they appear to be circles.”
Impossible, right? Well, apparently not if you’ve got a 3D printing device at your disposal — as Devin Montes of YouTube channel Make Anything not long ago proved by reverse-engineering a solution.

“The video was made late at night on the spur of the moment, when I saw another video revealing this illusion, but offering no explanation,” Montes tells Digital Trends. “I took it upon myself to figure out what was causing this mind-boggling trick, for the reason I idea it may be super rad to 3D print my own. When I got it to work, I immediately filmed myself revealing off the trick.”

The nifty solution, as Montes’ above video shows, is which the shapes Sugihara made aren’t circles or squares at all, but pretty a shape in between which plays off the way our brain perceives images. “This puzzle is excellent for the reason it’s easy, yet so effective,” Montes continues. “Even when you understand how it works, it fools you.”
He adds which he collects much like illusions, which he has scattered throughout his house. “I idea this may be manufacture a excellent addition to my mess/collection,” he notes.
