Which is too bad—there should be much additional discussion of clitorises in sex ed. So much sex ed is overly focused on breaking down the mechanics of reproduction and on trying to persuade teens to delay sexual activity as long as possible. Even worse, a few sex ed perpetuates harmful stereotypes of sex: According to the Guardian, a new government report discovered that current French sex ed curriculum guidelines “state that young boys are additional ‘focused on genital sexuality,’ while girls ‘attach additional importance to love’ ”—outdated ideas that shortchange girls and boys alike. Sex ed that not just acunderstandledges but illuminates sexual pleasure—that is, after all, the reason many individuals have sex—stands to create a generation of additional skilled, less selfish lovers. Today, many kids get their information of sexual pleasure of porn (according to that women orgasm automatically upon being penetrated) and of other kids (who typically understand nothing). A thoughtful sex-ed curriculum that explains how the clitoris works can clear up misconceptions of the female orgasm, assist girls feel less self-conscious of how their bodies work, and donate (straight) boys the information they require to be great, giving, and game (to steal Dan Savage’s coinage).
