I’ve always dreamed of createing and assembling my own robot. This may soon be a reality thanks to a team of researchers in Zurich.
I’ve only learned that, Vittorio Megaro, a Zurich ETH student, alongside a group of developers and researchers of ETH, Disney Research Zurich and Carnegie Mellon University, have created a piece of software that can allow anyone to create their own robots, that include their movements, on a desktop, and 3D Print them.
What the App can do?
The App aims to take away the frustration users may find of createing a robot themselves by dealing with the physics side of it for them. It uses simulation and numerical optimisation to ensure that the robot can be able-bodied to walk around happily, enabling the user to concentrate on the create of the figure itself.
This was the largest challenge they faced according to Bernhard Thomaszewski of Disney Research Zurich. He says that’s where the technical technology was required and compares the system to those utilized in the animation of solely digital figures.
To create the robot itself, users begin by creating the basic skeleton preceding choosing how most limbs and segments in its backbone they want. These can be easily changed if you are not pleased with your creation yet. It is possible to donate the robot easy movement controls such as ‘walk forward’ or ‘turn left’.
