3D printing satellites in outer space can sound like the stuff of sci-fi movies, but that is precisely where the aerospace industry’s largest players are heading.

More than only a rad gimmick, 3D printing may assist save companies money when launching satellites into space by assembling parts of them there.
“If you ponder of challenges in getting a satellite into orbit, if you ponder of primary antennas, the fold out antennas we have, the ability to print a thing in space and deploy it of space is quite interesting,” Andy Anderson, deputy chief innovation officer at Airbus, told CNBC in an interview at the Farnborough air show on Monday.
